The Caledonian canal

07.08.2003

We got a bit stucked in Inverness, trying to collect the huge fee to pay the passage into the caledonian canal, so we try to get to the battlefield of Culloden, last butchery betveen English and Scots, the place is not very interesting , showing once again how st upid people can be fighting in stead of playing chess.
while François was writing and i was reading my book, Tree Paul, called on my wooden viking mobile phone, he was driving and thougt to us, so he called.
He took us in a very intersting sigtseeing tour of some Pictish settlements and burials places, told us a lot of stories abouts the picts, the cherry trees and lots more, and after that drove us to a party in a farm, it was there a lots of different peopple, all musicians, singing, playing the fiddle to the morning, we played and spoke all night.
the next morning, i obtain a free passage, but we have to play with several other musicians in some spots for the tourists, that seems a good deal for us and we did twice near the Loch Ness.
We arrived on our first pier in Loch Ness in a very quiet evening, and it seems to be easy to cross...
It was not at all, Nessie too please to have us around, made is best to keep us there, making a very strong wind against us.
one try we gave we had to turn back, making without sail the nice speed of 3.9 knots and a point to 4.9! we had to wait one day, leaving early the next one, rowing against a less stong wind but still.
we reached fort Augustus, sailed and rowed a bit to reach Fort William, the other end of the Caledonian canal.
Fenrir is waiting for us there, while we have been hitchhiking to the nice Island of Skye, Staying at Morag's place, the Gaelic singer wew met at the birthday party. She drove us to a tour on the island, showing some standing stones and other nice things to see here.
We 'll pick Fenrir as soon as possible with the regrtet that we did'nt manage to sail to Skye but the Skipper (me, julien )is running a bit out of time to sail Fenrir as south as possible for the end of september...
