sail with a square sail

30.04.2003

Ok, first forget all What you know about the sails.
Then, a square sail is not square. It is smaller at the top.
the wind still blowing any time but normally not from where you thought.
A square sail is a sail, yes, but you are suppose to tight it on the upper side of the wind in the front and in the back have a lot of ropes (whitch try allways to takes the head of francois) to handle the sail.
forget to turn against the wind,(stag vending, på norsk) it s just too difficult, go against the wind then the sail is packed against the mast, sail down, put a row in the water turn the ship, switch the sail, sail up and if lucky, let s go!
So you have to turn with the wind (Ku vending, på norsk). That a bit easier, go down, have back wind let loose the rope, change the sail and tigh again.
When accomplished all those moves, Alfred, the ship that we borrow from Swen can sail again.
And quiet well! Saturday, we been packed by a suddent front wind and goimg back to the quiet harbour by rowing, we was not so proud of us... but on sunday, medium wind, and we needed to ride again the horse after a fall.
So let s ride! 6.5 knots on my gps, not bad! we could nt try full back wind to increase our speed cause the shore was too close (and two guys in a piece of broken woods all over the beach, being really proud of their 8 knots was not our purpose...).
